Engineer Operations – New Product Introduction (NPI) - TEM

The Engineer Operations – New Product Introduction (NPI)

is a member of the NPI group within the Operations Engineering organization of Thermo Fisher MSD . The NPI team is responsible for product introduction in manufacturing and service according the Product Management Process (PMP) process. This starts at the requirements phase in R&D and continues via alpha testing to a production ready implementation of tools in our manufacturing department. The engineers use their technical background to guide this implementation, validate the product, prepare the process documents, train the factory and service engineers and finally push for release. Generally, each engineer has 1 or 2 main projects running simultaneously in various phases, depending on module or integration projects.

The Position

The Production Engineer is responsible for the smooth introduction of new products into the factory and field. This position interfaces with R&D, Product Marketing, manufacturing, service, logistics, purchasing, suppliers and quality groups. The goal is ensuring development of sustainable products according to the latest quality standards, at lowest COGS and in line with best practices. Specific deliverables associated with this position include:

  • From the technical product angle, assist the NPI-lead with the introduction of system level projects from inception to completion (release).
  • Generate, gather and validate system performance requirements, involving the relevant internal stakeholders, having focus on design for manufacturability, testability, reliability, sustainability and serviceability.
  • Factory process enhancement by identification and steady elimination of waist to improve system cycle times and cost efficiency, making use of the lean manufacturing toolset.
  • Create, validate and release system level work instructions for the factory as well as for Service.
  • Review of work instructions coming from the modules and publishing those in the overall workflow design.
  • Factory workflow architecture; take ownership of the production flow (FinalTest) on system level. Modularity, interdependencies, flexibility and completeness are key areas of attention.
  • Develop technical product documentation, Manufacturing and Service work instructions and process documentation.
  • Support factory and field service engineers with first builds, installs and upgrades of newly introduced systems to ensure proper working order.
  • Conduct detailed troubleshooting and analysis of system or component level problems that affect reliability, performance, list hours, manufacturability etc.
  • As required, provide 3rd line Service support on the modules under your supervision.

  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing, its tools and practical application in complex manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of advanced technology diagnostics as well as troubleshooting techniques, operational optimization, and experience of analytical equipment; specifically, electron/ion microscopes.
  • Hands-on mentality; you love high end technical complex tools and problems and have the drive to take on challenges yourself.
  • Areas of technical interest; General understanding of Vacuum systems, TEM and application SW, EM optics, Sample handling, System integration, verification by system acceptance test (SAT), volume management, configuration management (system tree), X-ray safety, lean manufacturing process flows.
  • Being able to read and interpret Business Intelligence data and take appropriate action on data found, problems occurring, manage and involve necessary stakeholders. Solid computer skills are required (Word, Excel)
